Preparing for Surgery
Food and Drink – The following are food and drink guidelines. For your safety, please follow these guidelines.
0-6 months old
• No solids/milk/formula/breast milk for 4 hours before surgery
• No clear liquids for 2 hours before surgery
Over 6 months old
• No solids/milk/formula/breast milk for 6 hours before surgery
• No clear liquids for 2 hours before surgery
Adolescents & Adults
• No solids/milk for 6 hours before surgery*
• No solids/milk for 6 hours before surgery*
* Unless otherwise instructed by the Anesthesiologist
Clear liquids include soda, black coffee, tea, or any liquid you can see through.
Milk (including breast milk), orange juice or formula are not considered clear liquids. DO NOT drink any alcohol (beer, wine, liquor) the day before or the day of surgery.
When the Anesthesiologist reviews your medical
history, you will be given instructions regarding which medications to take with water prior to
surgery. If anything about your condition changes, or if you or your child develop a rash, fever, cold, infection, of other illness after speaking with the Anesthesiologist, please notify your physician immediately.
For your safety, a friend or family member should accompany you to the hospital in order to drive you home afterward. You will not be released from the hospital unless you have someone to provide you with transportation.
