Orthopedic

What is orthopedic anesthesia?
Orthopedic anesthesia is a subspecialty of anesthesia that deals with your bones or skeletal system. Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants have anesthesiologists that are trained specifically to handle the complex nature of orthopedic surgery.

What is different about orthopedic anesthesia than other types of anesthesia?
All types of anesthesia are used during orthopedic surgery, but there are a variety of techniques that allow your anesthesiologist to customize their care specific to your orthopedic surgery needs. These techniques include, but are not limited to:
   • Special positioning to avoid intraoperative nerve injury
   • Hypotensive anesthesia is the act of inducing arterial hypotension (or an abnormally
low blood pressure) to minimize blood loss.
   • Isovolemic Hemodilution - a mechanism your anesthesiologist can use to minimize
     blood loss
